This presentation will make the argument that integrating Africana history & philosophy into the business school curricula is a significant step toward embracing and enhancing the entrepreneurial knowledge, self-efficacy, and motivation of Black students. There is a growing body of scholarship, research, case studies, and business history to inform a more inclusive curriculum and this presentation will make the case that to truly decolonize the curriculum requires an engagement with 1) Precolonial African Entrepreneurship, 2) Slavery, Capitalism, and Modern Management, 3) the Golden Age of Entrepreneurship, and 4) Alternative Models of Enterprise.
Dr. Prieto will discuss his own 2019 coauthored work (with Dr. Simone T. A. Phipps) entitled: African American Management History: Insights on Gaining a Cooperative Advantage & the recently published Academy of Management Learning & Education coauthored article (with Phipps, Guigni & Stott) entitled: Teaching (Cooperative) Business: The “Bluefield Experiment & the Future of Black Business Schools.

Leon C. Prieto, PhD is the Director of the Center for Social Innovation & Sustainable Entrepreneurship, and Associate Professor of Management at Clayton State University. He also serves as an Associate Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge Judge Business School's Centre for Social Innovation. His research lies at the intersection of Management History, Business Ethics, Sustainable Entrepreneurship & Social Innovation, and can be found in the Journal of Business Ethics, Academy of Management Learning & Education, Harvard Business Review, MIT Sloan Management Review, and Journal of Management History.
